Franchise: "The Mariner's Revenge Song" (song by The Decemberists)
Theme: Obsession (#71)
Chance of sequel: Slim-to-none

Already, less than 24 hours later, I submit the second piece in the 100 Theme Challenge. This one was written quite feverishly, since I was excited to do it (besides, I had yesterday and today off). I wish I could've picked a better theme, I thought one existed but, if you read the comments on the first one, I was mistaken. So, I picked one that stretched it quite a bit and still barely fits, in my opinion.

The inspiration for this piece is the incredibly awesome "Mariner's Revenge Song", written and performed by the Decemberists, one of my favorite bands. Colin Meloy, the lead vocalist, guitarist, and songwriter in the group, has skills that I envy very much; the level of writing in his songs is one that I hope to attain. A lot of their songs are more narrative and less "Oh, baby, you're so hot", so I may borrow from them sometime again in the future. The lyrics to this particular song can be found here: [link]

The mature tag is there because of violence and one or two instances of strong language, depending on just how sensitive you really are to such things. It's probably not necessary, but I just wanted to make sure.

...I'm not really sure if this counts as fanfiction, but whatever. It was fun to write. I'll get to work on the next one as soon as I can figure out what it's gonna be about.

Lastly, read the artist's comments here if you're not sure why half of the story is in bold and the other half isn't: [link]

So, leave detailed reviews. Also, be sure to let me know how well you think the story fits the theme. That's pretty important for my development as a writer.

EDIT: I cheated a bit. I changed the theme from "Trouble Lurking" to "Obsession" because I thought the latter fit the story a lot better. Sorry about that. I'll do a better "Trouble Lurking" one later.

We have here a rather unusual work, fanfiction based on a song. It works surprisingly well, in part due to the narrative nature of the source material, as well as the skill of the writer. As a story has more room for words than even the longest song, the emotions of the narrator are given more room for development, and while we already know the direction he's moving in, his agonizing march toward revenge is all the more engrossingly painful. The best portions of the story are when some of the song's gaps are filled in- particularly the downfall of his mother, and of course the chilling yet perversely satisfying ending. Overall, it's very well written and quite enjoyable, and I know that all future times that I listen to the song, it'll have all the more impact.
